Rajinikanth's Kochadaiiyaan to hit theatres on April 11

The much-awaited Rajinikanth flick Kochadaiiyaan - The Legend, directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin, is expected to hit the theatres on April 11, 2014. The movie is estimated to have a budget of Rs 100-125 crore, according industry sources.

The movie would be released in seven languages - Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Bengali and Punjabi in India and overseas in more than 6,000 screens.

Sunil Lulla, managing director of Eros International Media Ltd, which presents the movie produced by Chennai-based Media One Global Entertainment, said an English version of the movie would be released internationally as well.

The movie is an epic dramatisation of good versus evil with Rajinikanth in a double role. Hindi film actor Deepika Padukone is playing a leading role in the film, which has actors from the Tamil and south Indian film industry.

Photorealistic performance capture technology, used in Hollywood movies such as Avatar, Tin Tin and Beowulf, has been used for the first time in any Indian film. “For the first time, a full length feature has been made using performance capture technology in India and I truly hope this creates a whole alternate film making avenue apart from live action films in our country,” said Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin. Musical scores are from AR Rahman.

This movie comes after a gap of almost three years after Enthiran (Robo), in 2010, though Rajanikanth had a a guest appearance in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Ra.One in 2011.

Eros International and Media One Global have also announced a tie up with Karbonn Mobile to launch 1 million exclusive Kochadaiiyaan branded mobile phones, which will have screen savers and images from the film along with its trailer and signature tune. The mobile phone is expected to be launched in February, during the audio launch of the film.

The movie has been shot at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom with  support of international experts such as London-based Centroid Studios, which has worked for Hollywood movies like Pirates of the Carribean, and Los Angeles-based Counter Punch Studios which was behind Beverly Hills Chihuahua and UK-based Faceware Technologies, which has works like The Mummy 3 and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button to its credit for facial capturing technology.
