Baar Baar Dekho’s message is quite clear – the present moment is all we have; past cannot be changed and future is uncertain. The movie is also about the importance of family relations and embracing the seemingly small, everyday joys of life that eventually come together to make up the big picture.
Jai Verma (Sidharth Malhotra) is hugely passionate about mathematics and aspires to become one of the best mathematicians in the world. His ambitions are so important to him that he appears to be disinterested in his marriage with his girlfriend, the stunning Diya (Katrina Kaif). However, luck seems to favor him, as he gets to see glimpses of the future. Not happy with what he has become in the future – a successful mathematician, but a lonely one – Jai decides to balance the equations of his life by going back in time and learning to live in the moment.
The thought of going back in time and correcting one’s mistakes is an interesting idea that makes the movie worth watching. Many successful movies in the past have utilized similar ideas, which have been appreciated by the audience. However, Baar Baar Dekho is a bit different, as it’s not very clear how Jai gets to see glimpses of the future. Also, the story appears to ‘coerce’ Jai into following a specific path in life rather than following his dreams without any distractions. Talking about the future, Diya could have been more supportive, rather than acting clingy and demanding time and attention. These loose ends have not been given proper attention in the movie. The women’s perspective is heavy in this movie, which may be a flaw that director Nitya Mehra may need to correct in her future endeavors.
The movie clicks because the scenes are quite amusing and offer a fresh perspective. Soulful background music, melodious songs and visually enchanting locales create the perfect mood for experiencing the delicate romantic moments in the movie. Sidharth has delivered a good performance in his complex role whereas Katrina does not appear to go beyond the ordinary.
Baar Baar Dekho makes for an interesting watch, especially, to enjoy with your loved one. If you like romantic love stories, go for it!
