Driving into a new era, Wonder Woman has finally hit the screens across the globe, much to the delight of women fans, who have often felt something amiss in the larger than life world of superheroes. A purely woman-oriented superhero movie was in the plans for several decades, but due to one reason or another, it ended up being pushed back in favor of male-led superhero characters. As with any redefining move, there are great expectations from Wonder Woman, especially Gal Gadot who plays the lead role in the movie. She has already done quite well in her first appearance ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, something that has certainly been useful now when she is leading from the front to save the world.
The story catches up with the life of Diana (Gal Gadot), princess of the Amazons, who has been brought up on a sheltered island paradise. She has been trained to become a fierce warrior, but her powers are of little use within the confines of the island paradise. However, things change when an American pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crashes near the shores of the island paradise and is rescued by Diana. Trevor is amazed to see the peaceful environs of the island paradise and puzzled to know that the inhabitants of the island including Diana are unaware of the massive war raging in the world. When Diana comes to know about the war in the outside world and that it can potentially destroy the world, she decides to leave home and put an end to the war. In doing so, she comes to realize her full powers as Wonder Women.
The movie is mature as it does not utilize the standard formula of male bashing to promote female leads. As a matter of fact, there’s a very progressive relationship that Diana and Trevor share in the movie. Diana is not the usual damsel in distress and Trevor understands this very well. Their relationship is based on mutual respect, which is refreshing to see in a superhero movie.
Wonder Woman offers a lot of punch and has great potential. Undoubtedly, it is among the best superhero movies to hit the screens in recent times.
