“A wounded lion is the most dangerous”, goes the saying, and this is the core theme in Sarkar 3. It’s been 12 years since the franchise was launched and the story of Subhash Nagre or Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan) has taken various intense twists and turns that we have enjoyed for most part. Subhash Nagre has become a lot older now and he has lost his two sons Vishnu (Kay Kay Menon) and Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan), but he has not lost his beliefs and his will to fight. He still enjoys immense support among the masses, something that his enemies deeply abhor. In Sarkar 3, Subhash Nagre shares the stage with his grandson Shivaji Nagre (Amit Sadh) aka Cheeku, who does not believe in the old system and has his own agenda and plans to put into action.
Subhash Nagre’s empire is now managed by two of his lieutenants, Gokul (Ronit) and Raman (Parag). Gokul has aspirations to take over Subhash Nagre’s empire, but Shivaji quickly realizes this, which leads to an intense power struggle within the family. There are outsiders as well who hate Subhash Nagre and want to destroy his empire and his clout among the masses. There’s Michael Vallya (Jackie), a greedy businessman; Govind Deshpande (Manoj), who seeks political power; and Gandhi (Bajrangbali), a conniving power-broker. Subhash Nagre has to choose his moves very carefully to overcome these devilish forces.
Sarkar 3 retains much of its earlier themes that come with the trademark Govinda chant that plays in the background. The intense play of lights and shadows that surround the often brooding characters has also been retained. Director Ram Gopal Varma’s intensity is clearly visible, as he successfully extracts the right emotions from the various characters in the movie. Bachchan continues to delight even as he gets older. Other actors including Amit, Manoj, Jackie and Ronit have delivered good performances.
If you have been following the Sarkar franchise, you wouldn’t want to miss this one.
