It appears to be the season of offbeat films in Bollywood and there’s good reason for it since these films are creating huge cash piles at the box office. Yet another movie to follow that trend is Firangi, which refuses to go with the mainstream formula and fights to create its own distinct identity. A distinctive feature of Firangi is that it has India’s leading stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma in the lead role. This is Kapil Sharma’s second film in which he has taken up the role of the protagonist. His first film was Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, which was released in 2015. Kapil Sharma has a huge fan following in India, but his popularity is largely for his skills as a stand-up comedian.
Firangi has an interesting story, wherein Manga (Kapil Sharma) is a village simpleton who has been branded as ‘useless’ by his family and villagers. However, he has a special skill, which becomes indispensable to the British people. The story tells a tale of pre-independent India, a time when people across the country were uniting against the British rule. However, Manga is the only person who has a reason to believe that the British may not be that bad after all. Nonetheless, there is some turn of events, which forces Manga to rethink his believes. The movie also has a captivating love story, captured most beautifully by Manga and Sargi (Ishita Dutta).
Kapil Sharma has excelled in his career as a stand-up comedian, but his success in other streams such as cinema has been limited. Firangi attempts to offer a new perspective about British people, which is interesting. Both Kapil Sharma and Ishita Dutta are pleasant to watch and they share a good chemistry. Other actors have also performed well.
Firangi will not awe you with its brilliance, but it does offer a new angle on love and history. If you like to experiment, Firangi is just the thing you need.
